Meeting of Technical Working Group (TWG) Health Sector under Revised Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Multi-Sectoral Integrated Nutrition Strategy (KP-MS-INS)

The subject meeting was held under the Chairmanship of Director General Health Services, Department of Health.

Director Nutrition Dr. Fazal Majeed Director explained the objective of the meeting and gave the background of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Multi Sectoral Integrated Nutrition Strategy (KP-MS-INS). He stated that it was developed in the 2014 after a thorough consultative process based on the findings of the national nutrition survey 2011. A Steering Committee was notified chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary P&DD. Furthermore departmental technical working groups (TWGs) were notified and they started their activities to reduce the malnourishment in the province. After the findings of  NNS 2018, it was observed that some indicators are being improved but some are still not satisfactory. Revision of KKP-MS-INS was proposed based on the NNS 2018 findings, Merger of tribal areas in KP and alignment of strategy with SDGs. The Director Nutrition highlighted the area of interventions in the revised strategy which would be incorporated through group work of the participants

The forum was informed that KP-MS-INS strategy is being revised and tried to make it align with global and national strategies and Sustainable Development Goals. As the causes of malnutrition is multiple which involved multiple stakeholders and implement multisectoral interventions.

The Chair appreciated the good work and efforts of all the stakeholders including UNICEF, WFP, Representatives from the Health Department (Chief HSDU, Planning Cell) , different departments of Directorate of Health like IHP, Nutrition, MNCH, MCH, P&D, Academia and other relevant departments. He pointed out that malnutrition is a problem of the country which has been also highlighted by the Prime Minister of Pakistan in the first speech to the Nation. He emphasised on the Multi Sectoral approach and said that without engagement of all relevant sectors malnourishment issue cannot be addressed, particularly stunting which is higher prevalence rate 40% in KP . The Chair endorsed the recommendations of the working groups and made commitment for a meeting with Secretary Health in order to share group recommendations.
